How to Get
the Best Results From Your Background Check
When you run a
background check, it is important to have all of the necessary
information on hand to avoid returning false results and having to pay
for reports that you don’t need. In order to avoid this, here are some
easy steps that you can take.
1. Get the complete name of the person you want to
run the background check on. This step is one of the easiest ways to
make sure you are looking for the right records. Having a full first and
last name, as well as a middle name, will help you narrow down the
results and ensure that you are getting the right report for the right
individual.
However, this can be difficult if you do not have enough information on
an individual. In the case of a landlord or employer, the person will be
required to supply this information during an application process. If
you are trying to run a background check on a personal friend, it can be
more difficult to get the right information, particularly if they are an
experienced con-artist.
In this case, you will need to try to do all of the legwork that you can
to make sure that you have the correct and full name of the individual.
You may need to get creative in order to find this information, or you
may be able to contact their place of work or ask one of their friends.
The extra effort will pay off when you get the results of a correct
background check.
2. Get Their Date of Birth. This is one of the best ways to ensure that
the results returned are accurate. While many people may share the same
name, even the same middle name, it is much less likely that they will
share a birth date. Once again, you may need to get creative to get this
information. In some cases, you may have to piece this information
together, by first getting the month and date, and then trying to figure
out just how hold the individual is, if they are not forthcoming with
the actual information.
A date of birth may be required for several searches, such as country
records and state records. If you don’t have this information, you may
not be able to run the background check, or you may get results on
someone else. Do your best to find this information ahead of time.
3. References. If you’re not an employer or a landlord, it can be very
difficult to get an individual to supply you with references. However,
you can use their friends and possibly even former places of work to
learn more about them and in some cases, to get the necessary
information mentioned above.
If you are an employer or a landlord, you should require at least three
references and three past places of employment to assist you in finding
out more about the individual before you actually run the background
check. This step can save you a lot of legwork and may help you fill in
any holes in the information you have already collected.
